There are so many reasons to love Alaska, the vastness and beauty of the state will draw your soul to never to leave. Even with the state’s strong emphasis on preserving and respecting wildlife and ecosystems, there’s a unique freedom there, including the ability to hike off trail in many areas. I took advantage of that freedom often throughout the season, which allowed me to reach perspectives and choose my own framing without feeling confined to a marked path. This image of Savage River came from one of those moments. Trekking off the trail gave me the chance to get closer to the water and capture the scene exactly the way I envisioned it.
